New Insularity demonstrates Jennifer Chan’s interests in online video as a medium for emotional expletives and quick-witted artistic dialogue. Addressing the potentials for aesthetic homogeneity in the curation of online exhibitions that consist of mutual friends within online communities, this screening showcases video by peers and users that have influenced Chan’s practice. From bizarre performance for the (web)camera to celebratory uses of found footage, this program invokes the irreverent tendencies of amateur video in light of peer-aware online art practices. Playful editing and low-fi animation highlight the influence of user-generated video on the aesthetics of emerging video art.
